Amputation

amputationsApproximately 50,000 amputations occur every year across the US, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. There are a projected estimate of 1.8 million amputees in the United States and an approximation of 3 million amputees in all of North America.

A large number of amputations occur as a result of traumatic accidents. However, diseases such as cardiovascular disease outnumber trauma as the primary cause. Diabetes, cancer, infections and tumors also result in numerous amputations. Amputations are defined as severing of a body part, and the most prevalent loss of limbs is fingers. When an arm or leg amputation occurs there may be extreme blood loss, shock, infection and sometimes even death.

If amputation occurred due to a doctor’s failure to exercise reasonable care, there may be grounds for a lawsuit. Litigation may also be possible in other circumstances, such as workplace injuries or in auto accidents where another person was at fault. An attorney experienced in litigating amputee cases, can help you determine if you have a case and strive to help you receive the maximum compensation entitled by law.
