Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a skin disorder where widely distributed blisters on the trunk and face develops and spread to other parts of the body. It can lead to serious injuries such as disfigurement and scarring, blindness and photophobia, organ damage and death.

Various types of medications both prescription and over-the-counter have been associated with causing Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Some of the more common medications implicated are:

  • Ibuprofen
  • Sulfonamides
  • Anticonvulsants
  • Chlormezanone
  • Allopurinol,
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

If you have Stevens Johnsons Syndrome, you may experience symptoms such as facial swelling, hives, red or purple skin rash, blisters on your skin (especially your nose, eyes, mouth), and hives. However, before the rash develops you may experience less serious symptoms such as fever, sore throat, cough, and burning eyes. If you experience these symptoms, you should seek medical help immediately.
