Zocor (Simvastatin) is a cholesterol lowering manufactured by Merck Pharmaceuticals. It is prescribed for patients with high cholesterol to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol, triglycerides, and total cholesterol in your blood while increasing the amount of HDL (good) cholesterol in your blood.

Though Zocor can dramatically decrease your cholesterol levels in the blood, it can also cause a dangerous side effect known as rhabdomyolysis, a condition where the breakdown of muscle fibers result in the release of muscle fiber contents (myoglobin) into the bloodstream damaging the kidney. Rhabdomyolysis is a potential side effect of all statin drugs but recent studies in the scientific communities have suggested that Zocor risk of causing rhabdomyolysis may be higher than it was originally anticipated especially in patients who are taking higher doses (80mg).

Some of the symptoms of rhabdomyolysis are:

  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Dark urine
