Zithromax® (known generically as azithromycin) is a macrolide antibiotic used alone or in combination with other antibiotics to fight many different bacterial infections including: sinus infection, lung infections, sexually transmitted diseases, skin and soft tissue infections.  Zithromax®, marketed by Pfizer Inc., Zithromax® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1991 for the treatment and prevention of bacterial infections.

Side effects of Zithromax® include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain

More serious side effects reported with the use Zithromax® include:

  • Jaundice
  • Necrosis
  • Hepatic failure
  • Wrongful death

It may only take a few Zithromax pills to cause the liver damage.  Reports show Pfizer had knowledge of liver failure associated with Zithromax as early as 1996 when it started receiving case reports.  These reports showed the liver damage linked to Zithromax was very severe and even fatal.  However, it was not until 2000 when Pfizer warned the public only after being required to do so by the FDA.

Signs of liver damage and failure include:

  • Jaundice (a yellowing of the eyes and skin)
  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain
  • Fever
  • Severe fatigue
  • Dark urine
  • Elevated liver enzyme levels
