Zetia (Ezetimibe) is a cholesterol lowering agent manufactured by Merck and Schering-Plough. It is prescribed for patients with high cholesterol to reduce the amounts of LDL (bad) cholesterol by blocking the absorption from the gut and is sometimes used with other cholesterol lowering agents like statins.

When taken with a statin such as Crestor, Zocor, Lipitor etc. Zetia has been linked to serious side effects including rhabdomyolysis, liver failure, acute pancreatitis, and thrombocytopenia. Even using a statin by itself, up to 7% of patients experience muscle problems, but the risk rises to more than 10% when used in combination with Zetia. In fact, recent studies show that high doses of Zetia combined with statin therapy may result in cardiomyopathy, a serious condition characterized by the weakening of the heart muscles. A weakened heart can lead to ineffective pumping of the blood and therefore result in reduced supply of oxygen to the heart and the rest of the body. Other side effects of Zetia can include dizzinss, fatigue, diarrhea, nausea, and headache.

If you, or a loved one, have suffered injuries to the heart while taking Zetia, you may be entitled to financial compensation. For a free legal consultation with our pharmacist attorney, please contact Kane Legal.
