Topamax (known generically as topiramate) is an anticonvulsant agent used alone or in combination with other medications for the treatment of certain seizures. It is also prescribed to prevent migraine headaches. Topamax was originally produced by Ortho-McNeil Neurologics and Noramco, Inc. and is now generically available by other manufacturers.
In March 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recognized Topamax (topiramate) is now known to cause fetal harm involving an increased risk for clef lip and/or cleft palate in children whose mothers took Topamax while pregnant. Recent data suggests women who are pregnant and take Topamax, are twenty times more likely to give birth to children with abnormal deformities.
A cleft palate is a serious birth defect that requires ongoing care for many years. It is however, a correctable deformity after several surgeries starting in children as young as six months up into the late teens. If left uncorrected, several complications and issues may arise such as, difficulty eating, speech problems and infections.
