Heparin is an anticoagulant that has been used in the United States since the 1930s. It is indicated for various conditions such as acute coronary syndrome, atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis etc.
Currently, a class action lawsuit has been filed against Baxter Healthcare Corp for substituting ingredients in the drug with a counterfeit that is not only ineffective but also dangerous. According to the claim, Baxter purposely added over sulfated chondroitin sulfate to heparin to lower the cost from $900 to only $9. As a result, there were hundreds of allergic reactions that resulted in more than 80 deaths and hundreds injured in the United States alone. After an investigation, the FDA issued an announcement that the contaminant was an inexpensive and unapproved ingredient that mimics heparin.
Baxter placed tens of thousands of patients at unnecessarily risk of serious injury and death with heparin that was adulterated, misbranded, and defective for its use.
