Duragesic fentanyl patch is used for treating chronic pain by supplying the local area with a constant dose of fentanyl over time. Patients who use the patch usually either have tolerance to regular opioid treatments such as morphine or have chronic debilitating pain that cannot be easily managed with short acting painkillers.
It works very well in treating pain because fentanyl is approximately 80 times stronger than morphine. Because of its potency, however, fentanyl patch is also prone to cause dangerous side effects such as respiratory depression which can result in death. For this reason, in 2005, the FDA gave Duragesic patch a black box warning explaining the risk of accidental overdose that could be fatal.
Many lawsuits and recalls have been made because there were defects in the patch that released more of the medication than intended which resulted in several deaths. In the first four fentanyl lawsuits that went to trial, the drug maker was ordered to pay more than $35 million to the families of individuals who died.
