Cipro® (known generically as ciprofloxacin) is a second generation fluroquinolone antibiotic used alone or in combination with other antibiotics to fight may different bacterial infections including bone and joint infections, heart infections, sexually transmitted diseases, infectious diarrhea, lung infections and urinary tract infections.  Cipro®, marketed by Bayer, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1987 for the treatment and prevention of certain bacterial infections.

Side effects of Cipro® have been reported as being very mild and include:

  • Nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea

More serious side effects reported with use of Cipro® include:

  • Joint stiffness
  • Tendon pain

It wasn’t until July 2008 when the FDA put a “black box” warning, the most serious warning, on all Cipro® prescriptions.  This warning was required because of the increasing incidence of cases of tendon ruptures.  A tendon rupture is a serious injury that can leave patients incapacitated and needing extensive surgery.  The tendon most frequently associated to Cipro®-induced ruptures is the Achilles tendon.  Of note, Cipro® has also been linked to ruptures occurring in the rotator cuff (shoulder), the biceps, the hand, and the thumb.

Symptoms associated with Achilles tendon rupture:

  • Sudden and severe pain and swelling
  • Inability to walk normally
  • Unable to raise toes on the injured leg
