Chantix® (known generically as varenicline) is a smoking cessation aid used to help people stop smoking.  It works by blocking pleasant effects of nicotine from smoking in the brain. Chantix® decreases the cravings and decreases the withdrawal symptoms of nicotine.  Marketed by Pfizer, Inc., Chantix® was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006 for smoking cessation.

Common side effects reported with use of Chantix® include:

  • Nausea
  • Abnormal dreams
  • Headache
  • Insomnia

Serious side effects with the use of Chantix® were discovered during post marketing surveillance and include:

  • Psychosis, hallucinations, paranoia
  • Homicidal ideation, aggression, hostility
  • Suicidal ideation, suicide attempt, completed suicide
  • Serious skin reactions, including Steven Johnsons Syndrome (SJS)
  • Heart attack and other cardiovascular-related events

Lawsuits have been filed against Pfizer Inc., alleging Chantix side effects caused users to commit or attempt suicide and Pfizer failed to properly warn users and healthcare providers about such side effects.  The lawsuits claim Pfizer failed to adequately research their medication.
